Before Eikon Church ever had a Sunday morning service, Dan Matlock learned of a dream in the hearts of the staff at Hernandez Elementary School in San Marcos, TX. This dream was to start a club that met after school once a week where the students could learn more about the Bible. A small team of individuals from throughout the United States had moved here with Dan to share Jesus’s love with the residents of Hays County. Many of these people had little to no experience working with children in the past, but they understood that God would give them the skills and abilities to accomplish all that He asked them to do. After observing a similar Bible club at Travis Elementary School in San Marcos, this team launched Kids Rock Club at Hernandez Elementary in February 2013.

Over the past two and a half years, Kids Rock Club has continued to grow to the point where nearly one hundred children are attending. This has been possible because of the volunteers like Kimber Brown who led a small group of Kindergarten and 1st graders last school year. Here is what she has to say about this experience:

Kids rock club was a fulfilling experience that showed me Matthew 19:14 in a whole new light. “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.’” And that is exactly what I saw.

During the first couple of weeks at Kids club, it became clear to me that this was how God could use me to encourage kids to seek Him in everything. I was sent a short lesson plan weekly, and I felt prepared. I met with a group of kids every week to talk about their day, their family, about Jesus and His promises for them. I got to see the kids start to understand how and when to pray, how to be empathetic, how much He loves us, the importance of apologizing, that we are all made in His image, and so much more. To keep kids engaged we also played games and sang songs throughout the day. It was fun and rewarding for the kids and myself.

By the end of the year it was clear that God had instilled truths into these kids. They started initiating prayer for anyone they knew who was having a rough day, for their families, and for kids that have wronged them during the school day. These kids learned how to go to God with everything, and this happened right before my eyes. I came wanting to bless kids and left being blessed by them. I cherished the smiles of excitement when they entered the gym of Kids Rock Club. They would leave completely renewed and ready to take on whatever God had in store for them. I recommend this fulfilling experience to people who would like to see God work through them.

Kids Rock Club happens every Wednesday afternoon from 2-5 pm. Join us as we impact the lives of the kids in our community by clicking here.
