There is nothing in this world that could replace the love I have for this season! Enjoying time with family, delicious food, cool weather, Christmas music… I could go on… but you get it, Christmas spirit is in FULL swing.

All of these things are so fun and are what help make up the season, but if we’re not careful we can easily get caught up in all the commercialism of the holidays. It can easily turn into a competition as we strive to keep up with the Jones’. And often times we miss out on the opportunity to be a blessing to everyone around us.

I recently discovered an online initiative called #GivingTuesday that I’ve decided to make a holiday tradition for myself. #GivingTuesday takes place today which is three days after Black Friday and one day after Cyber Monday. This goal of #GivingTuesday is to help us prioritize others in this season when our thoughts and actions are flooded by checking off all the items on our shopping list. As we enjoy all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we’re reminded that we truly are more blessed when we give than when we receive.

As we lean into #GivingTuesday today, we have an amazing opportunity to bless our own community by participating in the First Gift Offering at Eikon Church. It’s our opportunity to give our first and best gift to God this holiday season. It’s our chance to thank God for all the blessings He’s given us, while also being a blessing to others. I know for me I want to play a part in sharing hope and joy with others.

This year we are investing every dollar that comes in from our First Gift offering to something that will alleviate the pain that over 64 million people feel! We’ve said from the beginning we want to be a church that is a blessing and a benefit to our community and we really mean it! In 2019 we’re going to practice putting love in action and sharing the love of Jesus in a very practical and tangible way. This special offering will enable us to pay off medical debt that exists right here in our own region.

Through an amazing non-profit called RIP Medical Debt, we will be paying off the medical debt of individuals right here in Texas. RIP Medical Debt has been featured on national news, USA Today, and even Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Through your generosity, we will be able to wipe out that debt completely for hundreds of families. The incredible thing about RIP Medical Debt is that every $1 donated can pay off $100 in medical debt.

We believe we are to be a church that loves not just in words but also in action. But in order to do this, we need every single one of you to join with us for the special First Gift offering! This year, we’re asking everyone to consider what it is they can give to this amazing cause. What would it be like to have a weight like that lifted off of those in our community? We wholeheartedly believe that as we all partner together, we can make a significant impact in our community.

This special First Gift offering will be above and beyond our regular tithes and offerings, so please be in prayer about the gift God would lead you to give. Let’s start this Christmas Season off right by eliminating over 1.5 million dollars of medical debt for Texans just like you.

We have so much to be thankful for and these things are easily highlighted when we take up opportunities to participate in generosity. Let’s allow this to be the anthem of the Christmas season, may our thoughts and actions be the overflow of gratitude in our hearts as we lead the way in generosity. Let’s all make #GivingTuesday a tradition in a nation that has made it easy to be consumed by commercialism. Let’s join God in being a blessing to others.
